Release Description:
Kate Voss & The Hot Sauce's debut album "Top Ten" features 10 of the band's favorite tunes to play while on the road. All of these tunes are repackaged versions of popular American songs from the 1950's and 1960's including Brenda Lee's "I'm Sorry" and Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walking". The core trio of this group consists of Jason Goessl on guitar, Mike Underwood on drums/bongos, and Kate Voss on vocals/bass/melodica. There are 6 tracks featuring exciting horn parts with Kurt Shipe on trumpet and Eric Koppa on tenor saxophone and the feel of each tune varies in genre from swing to rockabilly to pop ballads with an obvious appreciation for a retro style.
Review:
Kate Voss plays bass and melodica while singing the Boomer hits with Jason Goessl/g, Mike Underwood/dr, Kurt Shipe/tp and Eric Koppa/ts. She’s got a playful attitude and a confidence in the joy of them, swinging hard on “Route 66” and getting a bit of Memphis feel on “You Don’t Know Me” and the re-made“I Got A Boyfriend”. She’s coy for “I’m Sorry “ and kitschy on a bouncy “These Boots Are Made For Walking”. For a good time, call…
About Kate Voss:
Hailing from the Emerald City, Kate Voss got her start in Seattle’s club scene, performing with a wide variety of groups on piano. As her jazz studies came to a close and her musical interests stretched far beyond any one genre, a teacher dubbed her a “dilettante” — a title that only encouraged her to dive deeper into the many styles that would eventually shape Kate Voss & The Hot Sauce. Drawing from jazz, blues, pop, country, western swing, oldies, Americana, and rockabilly, the group has become a true variety act rooted in both musicianship and fun.
A full-time touring musician, Voss has developed a stage presence that charms audiences alongside a voice that “nails the authenticity of the era” (JazzTimes), moving effortlessly from Brenda Lee and Nancy Sinatra to Patsy Cline and Ray Charles. She has received Earshot Magazine awards for “Vocalist of the Year” and “Ensemble of the Year,” and after relocating to Wisconsin in 2021, earned multiple WAMI nominations. In 2026, she won the WAMI Award for Free Reed Instrumentalist of the Year for her work on melodica.
As leader of the band, Kate sings lead vocals, plays ukulele bass, and occasionally performs on melodica — all while sticking to her one rule: “We only play songs I love.”
For over a decade, Kate has toured nationally with her duo act Sundae + Mr. Goessl, performing thousands of shows across more than 40 states. Her instructional book, Melodica Method, was published by Hal Leonard in 2023. Voss also co-runs Sun Goose Records with her husband, Jason Goessl, along with the downtown Oshkosh boutique bar Can Can. In the summer of 2024, Kate and Jason welcomed their daughter, Juno, to the family.
